Why Is It Hard to Volunteer?

Volunteering is widely recognized as a positive and meaningful activity - so why do so many people struggle to do it consistently?

One of the biggest barriers is discovery. Opportunities exist, but they are often fragmented across different platforms, organizations, and websites. This makes it difficult to find something that fits your schedule and interests.

Time is another major factor. Many people assume volunteering requires a large commitment, which discourages them from getting started at all.

There's also a social barrier. Showing up alone to a new environment can feel uncomfortable, especially if you don't know what to expect or who will be there.

Lack of structure can also play a role. Some opportunities are unclear, disorganized, or difficult to coordinate, which creates friction in the process.

Finally, there's the issue of follow-through. Even when people intend to volunteer, competing priorities and lack of habit can make it easy to put off.

The desire to help is rarely the problem.

The challenge is making the process simple, accessible, and consistent.
